1. Which Energiser is Recommended?
When setting up an electric fence, the energiser plays a crucial role. This device supplies power to the fence and ensures its security. Many electric fence energisers are available online, but it’s essential to make a well-informed choice based on factors such as fence type, expectations, types of animals to contain, and available budget. In the following sections, we’ll answer key questions: which energisers suit different animals and scenarios? What should you consider before buying to ensure the energiser meets your needs? We’ll also explore options for both beginners and professionals.
2. How Does an Energiser Work?
Before discussing selection and purchase, it’s important to understand how an energiser works and its role in securing your fence. An electric fence comprises several components, including:
- Conductors (such as tape, wire, rope, and ribbon)
- Insulators
- Clamps and connectors
- Fence posts
- Earth stakes and underground cables
- Control equipment
- Batteries and accessories
- Optional: Solar power supply
These components work together to create a functional electric fence. The energiser acts as the heart of the fence, generating electric pulses that pass through conductors like electric ribbon. When an animal touches the fence or tries to enter, the circuit closes, delivering a short, sharp shock to the animal, which acts as a deterrent. The pulse travels through the animal’s body to the ground and is transmitted via the energiser's earth stakes.
3. Are Electric Fence Energisers Safe for Animals?
Yes, electric fence energisers are generally safe for animals when used and maintained correctly. The electrical impulse is brief but effective as a deterrent. The pulse lasts 0.1 to 0.3 milliseconds, with intervals of 1 to 1.4 seconds. Once the animal withdraws and breaks contact with the fence, no impulse is transmitted.
During installation, ensure the fence has proper connections (not tangled wires) and that the energiser is functioning correctly. The energiser's power depends on energy and voltage, which we’ll discuss further.
4. How Many Joules Should an Energiser Have?
The energy output of an energiser is measured in joules, a key factor in the power of the shock the animal receives. There are two types of energy: input energy (used by the device) and impulse energy (shock power delivered).
Lower resistance in both the energiser and conductors prevents energy loss, optimising fence performance. The joule rating indicates the power of the shock impulse. Excessive joules can be risky for small animals, while too little may be ineffective for larger animals. EU law sets a maximum of 5 joules for animals.
5. How Many Volts Should an Energiser Have?
Voltage is also essential in selecting the right device. Factors influencing the ideal voltage include:
- Animal type
- Soil and vegetation
- Fence length and complexity
- Conductor type
- Power source (mains, battery, or solar)
Higher voltage means a stronger device and more effective deterrence. Short fences for small animals may need less power, but for cattle or horses, 4000 volts is recommended. Generally, energisers range from 8,000 to 12,000 volts, with specific applications needing lower levels.
6. Which Energiser for Which Animals?
Consider the type of animal when choosing an energiser, as size, weight, and habits vary.
Check product symbols and specs to see which animals and situations the energiser suits.
Optimal Energisers for Animal Protection
Protecting pets or managing farm animals and wildlife access, not all energisers are the same. We offer two specialised models: the M35 (383361) and the S6 (349008).
M35 (383361) & S6 (349008): Ideal for Pets
For pets like cats and dogs, the M35 and S6 offer lower power, ensuring comfort and safety. These energisers are ideal for pet use, offering control without excessive shocks.
Advice for Livestock: Minimum 3500 Volts
For livestock, we recommend a minimum voltage of 3500 to ensure safety. Our energisers provide reliable barriers to keep livestock secure.
Advice for Wildlife: Minimum 4500 Volts
For managing wildlife, a minimum voltage of 4500 volts ensures effective deterrence. This protects land and crops from intruding animals.
Our goal is animal safety and customer satisfaction. Choose the M35 and S6 for pets, and rely on us for livestock and wildlife solutions.
7. Order the Best Electric Fence Energisers Online at Gallagher:
In addition to joules and volts, the power source is crucial. If near an outlet, consider a mains-powered energiser. For longer distances, a battery-powered or solar energiser is recommended. You’ll find detailed descriptions of each model to ensure you select the best energiser to suit your needs.
