Godminster Farm : Weighing calves for healthy growth and sustainable milk production
Nestled in the lush, rolling hills of Bruton in South West England, is Godminster Farm who represent a pioneering force in organic dairy farming. Founded as a first-generation dairy venture, this farm has grown over the years into a reputable source of high-quality dairy products.
Commitment to weighing young stock for optimal health
We’ve met Tegan and Peter at Godminster Farm. Peter has managed the farm since the late 1990s, and is supported by Tegan, the Young Stock Manager, who has been with the farm for three years.
Tegan’s role focuses on monitoring the growth and health of the young stock, a task that requires diligent care and precise data tracking. With a staff of five full-time and two part-time employees, the team operates efficiently to care for a herd of approximately 300 organic dairy cows.

Growth tracking and age at first calving
One of Tegan’s primary responsibilities involves monitoring the growth of young stock. Growth data is essential to ensuring that each heifer reaches the appropriate weight to calve by the age of two. Calving occurs in both the autumn and spring, and precise weight tracking helps ensure that young stock grow consistently and healthily, meeting the farm’s target of a 0.7 kg daily weight gain.
Godminster Farm’s approach to weighing is systematic, and they are doing this for quite a while. The young stock is weighed monthly in groups of around 30, starting from six weeks of age until they are weaned and continue to be tracked monthly until insemination.
For weighing, they rely on Gallagher’s weighing system, a trusted tool in the dairy industry. Tegan is managing the weighing process manually, transporting data to a computer for analysis before making decisions.
They consistently rely on Gallagher's equipment due to its reliability and their strong relationship with the dealer.
Their working method demonstrates a proactive approach to farm management, from animal weight tracking to pasture monitoring, all aimed at creating a healthier, more productive environment for their animals and, ultimately, their customers.

Exploring new technology: wireless loadbars and Animal Performance Plus
