Safe fencing for your horse

A good fence is very important for your horse's safety and well-being. A good fence helps prevent your horse from breaking out and/or getting injured. It also protects your horse from game or other unwanted intruders.

Injuries caused by poor fencing

Horses like to roll in the pasture to keep their coat in good condition. In unsafe fences, they can become entangled in loose or too low hanging rope or tape. This can lead to serious injuries.

Horses are very sensitive and can sense from a distance that there is current on the fence. Sufficient current ensures that the horse respects the fence and stays at a distance. In case of panic, it is important that the fence breaks so that the horse is not injured by it. When using the wrong materials or an incorrect combination of materials, the wire may not break in a panic situation, but may cause cuts.

Essential products for a safe fence

We explain four products that cannot be missing in a safe fence for your horse; tape, insulators, posts and an energiser.

Why Gallagher's TurboStar tape is unique

1. There is a conductor wire at the top and bottom. This makes the tape strong, the tape can be clamped properly, it rubs less in the insulators and conducts on both the top and bottom. The latter prevents horses from rubbing against the tape because they know there is current only at the centre of the tape.

2. Due to its open structure, TurboStar is less sensitive to wind, so it flaps less and is less likely to be damaged.

3. Optimal conduction due to the guided wires in the centre of the tape. These are also interconnected.

The safe TurboStar ribbon insulators

The TurboStar intermediate ribbon insulators can be recognised by the orange rubbers. These are moulded into the insulator so they do not come loose. As a result, the tape clamps extra well in the insulator and scuffs less. This benefits the tape's durability. They can be used on intermediate posts and are equipped with an extra (supplied) screw, so the tape is extra secured. A clip is also available for the Line Post post.

The TurboStar corner/end insulators can be used on a start/end post or corner post. These also have orange rubbers. As more force is applied at these points, it is important to use these specific ribbon insulators at these points. The insulator consists of three parts which provides extra strength. The screws are well hidden, so the horse cannot hurt itself on them.

The intermediate plate (art. no. 708027, not included) can be used as a joiner and gate handle anchor.

Advice and use

When using TurboStar tape, we also recommend using TurboStar insulators. In a panic situation, the tape will break, reducing the risk of serious injury. We also recommend clamping the tape tightly and maintaining it. This prevents the tape from flapping and keeps the fence safe.

Line Post post; A flexible, but extremely strong & safe post

The Line Post post has a fibreglass core and HDPE plastic casing, making it very flexible. The post is maintenance-free and has a lifespan of 25+ years.

The Line Post post is fully insulated, and for this reason cannot cause power loss. The insulators, also called clips, can be easily clicked onto the post at different heights.

i Series: A smart energiser for man & horse

An i Series energiser has an advanced adaptive control module that automatically adjusts the output voltage to the situation. This also makes it safe for shorter fences. If grass or vegetation makes contact with the wire, extra current is automatically added to keep the fence effective.
